Великолепный соул фанк от Checkmates LTD. Изданный на собственном рекорд лэйбле группы - Rustic Records, альбом стал первым LP коллектива, после разрыва группы с гениальным белым "продюссером-убийцей" Филом Спектром в 1970 году. Идеологом звучания в этот раз выступил фронтмэн группы Сонни Чарльз. И должен признать он отлично сработал, записав шикарный блэксплойтэйшн фанк! И это неспроста! Альбом - фактически саундтрэк к Blaxploitation фильму "The Black Connection.... Run, Nigger, Run" c "Шахиматами" в главных ролях. 6 трэков из десяти (Run Nigger Run, Sexy Ways, Street of Dreams, Might Get Betta, Coming Down, Pretty Balloons) звучат в фильме - сам проверял :) Кино - типичный низкобюджетный блэкс с черными авторитетами, итальянскими мафиози, белыми и черными сиськами, трэшевыми драками, убийствами и стильными кадиллаками. Можете сами составить впечатление о фильме, если владеете английским языком (ссылки внизу страницы).
Все трэки, за исключением фоновой инструменталки из фильма "Coming Down" - вокальные. Главным певцом выступил Сонни Чарльз со своим запоминающимся грубым тенором. Из песен особо выделю - заглавную тему из фильма "Run Nigger Run" и "Louie the Piper" - первосортные blaxploitation трэки, достойные классики жанра. Шикарный заводной соул-грувер - "Sexy Ways". "Might Get Betta" и "(Ain't a) Goddamned Thing Going On" медленные соул-фанк жемчужины! Всем фанкерам и коллекционерам blaxploitation саундтрэков альбом категорически реккомендуется, а остальные, я думаю это и не читают:)

New album – out 10th November 2009.
2010’s revelation could well come from Montpellier. For the last ten years or so, the collective ‘Fanga’ has been on the up, blending afrobeat, jazz and funk and playing a music that is eminently spiritual. Fanga means ‘strength of conviction’ in Dioula and the commitment of the group is emblematic of its name.
An alliance of complementary personalities and cosmopolitan energies, Fanga first took form in 1998. Returning from Africa, Serge Amiano brings back a few vinyls of the likes of Fela, CS Crew and CK Mann that he plays to the Burkinabese rapper Korbo. Amiano being a hip-hop producer naturally takes on the role of the group’s artistic director right from the start.
The discovery of this urban African music of the 1970s quickly forms the basis of a shared passion. In 2000 the album ‘Black Voices’ by Tony Allen definitively seals Fanga’s birth and its afrobeat foundations with an obvious orientation towards dance and the solid relationship between the eight members of the group.
Fanga brings out its first six tracks in 2001 with a minimal rhythm section. Joined by the bass player Rajaneesh Dwivedi and the drummer Samuel Devauchelle, the group records ‘Afrokalyptik’ in 2003, its first album. The following album ‘Natural Juice’ comes out in 2007, warmly received and with much acclaim. Fanga is not only highly praised by Gilles Peterson but also the New York magazine Wax Poetics.
Having played with Antibalas, Seun Kuti and Kokolo, Fanga has nurtured solid relationships within the international afrobeat community. In the studio, the group’s path crosses that of Tony Allen and the sadly demised Segun Demisa, both pillars of Fela Kuti’s Africa 70, as well as that of the iconoclastic rapper Mike Ladd. Fanga launches its live project on stages around England, Holland, Spain and Italy.
Despite being firmly rooted in certain Nigerian and Ghanean musical traditions (those of the 1970s’ afro-beat and high-life) Fanga is equally at home to musical concoction, as demonstrated by the samples and other hip-hop and electronic ingredients, not to mention the vocals in Dioula, English and French. The gritty horns and earthy analogue keyboards shape the group’s sound whilst Korbo has no hesitation in embracing his Mandingue roots.
Flowing without restraint, Fanga exudes both spirituality and an intense persuasive power. It is home to an iron fist, characteristic of the most proud and organic of black musics. Melodious and hypnotic, the pieces developed by the group not only strive towards a groove conducive to a state of trance but is also equally appealing to the mind.
Whilst avoiding lengthy discourses, revolutionary messages and the pretension of offering answers to the problems of the world, Korbo nonetheless poses serious lines of reflection, in particular, defending the right to be different as well as nurturing a deeper harmony between humankind and nature. He denounces the social injustice arising from the pyramidal economic structures that have become uncontrollable and egotistical. Newspaper headlines often inspire Fanga’s songs.
Brought up on the raw energy of hip-hop, the group reposes equally on certain values that even today can only be found in Africa, a sort of candour and instinctive sense of rhythm which lends such freshness to Fanga. This urge to respond when faced with a base emotion, however fleeting, has governed their musical progression since the beginning of the 2000s.
Empassioned and passionate, their music contains alluring promise. Fanga takes on an entire dimension on stage. Those who’ve had the chance of seeing the group live can only agree. Under the ongoing artistic direction of Serge Amiano, Fanga has recorded its third album in spring 2009 in Montpellier, entitled ‘Sira Ba’ (The Long Road).
Over the course of nine pieces, the collective Fanga offers a look at the past through the eyes of the present and the future. The Jamaican singer Winston McAnuff infuses a reggae accent in I Go On Without You, whereas the Togo All Stars orchestra shines out like a thousand fires on Dounya, one of the strongest and most jubilant of the album, resonating in the afro-funk echos of Moussa Doumbia and Amadou Ballaké.
Alternating drawn-out lyrical climaxes, explosive brass passages, killer riffs and melodic ease, ‘Sira Ba’ displays a powerful force of conviction, reflecting an uncompromised musical complicity and an impressive flow of energy. Julien Raulet’s guitar work reacts perfectly with the keyboards of David Rekkab and the percussion of Eric Durand.
Martial Reverdy’s baritone reinforces the energy and persuasive power exuded by Fanga, along with the lyrics that take us straight back to the most glorious hour of the golden age of afrobeat, laced with the influences of that ‘great black music’. Once fallen under the spell of this strength of conviction, all that remains is to dance.

Finally. Turner prize winning artist and director Steve McQueen (Hunger, 2008) has signed up to direct a biopic of the legendary Fela Kuti, and according to reports will write the screenplay with London based Nigerian born playwright and novelist Biyi Bandele. We wait with baited breath. (via)

К сожалению, многим талантливейшим исполнителям так и не достается слава в их эпоху. Так случилось и с Джо Куотэрманом, чьим единственным коммерческим успехом был его первый сингл - "(I Got) So Much Trouble in My Mind", добравшийся до 30 места рнб чарта в 1973 году. Последующий альбом изданный на небольшом лэйбле GSF Records, как и несколько последующих синглов так и добились популярности. К счастью, настоящие шедевры переживают свое время, находят своих почитателей и переходят в разряд культовых! Так и случилось практически со всем музыкальным материалом записанным cэром Joe Quarterman и его группой Free Soul.
В конце восьмидесятых-начале девяностых когда виниловые дигеры стали разгребать завалы никому ненужного винила в поисках грувовых трэков от забытых исполнителей и всплыло имя Джоуи. Его единственный изданный альбом "Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul" стал одной из самых значимых жемчужин пластиночных помоек, для виниловых барахольщиков. Яркий умный социальный фанк со ураганным грувом, был подостоинству оценен фанк коллекционерами и наконец обрел своего слушателя! С тех пор, всё что связано с творчеством сэра Джо сотоварищи стало предметом собирательства. "Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul" - уже своего рода торговая марка, стопроцентно говорящая что внутри правильный грув! Все 45ки его нескольких синглов, оригинальные издания альбома и переиздания, в том числе и на сд быстро раскупаются.
В 1994 японские фанки диггеры сделали фанкерам неожиданный подарок, издали компиляцию "Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul - How High: Rare Takes" включающие трэки со второго полноценного альбома Джо, записанного для лэйбла Mercury в период с 1974 по 1976 год. Альбом не издали из-за низкой популярности синглов Джо. Контракт музыкантов закончился и Джо забросил музыкальную карьеру, вернувшись в универ заканчивать магистратуру по специальности архитектора. Записи же были отложены на полку, пылится в архивах лэйбла. К огромному счастью, мастертэйпы отлично сохранились, и мы имеем возможность послушать всё того же молодого и талантливого музыканта с соулом и грувом в душе!
Половина "свежачка" это бомбы! Заглавный "How High" - сильный old-school jive talkin' funk! Your Number Is Your Life, You're Driving Me, Let Me Be What I Am - жесткий соц-фанк в духе дебютного альбома. You Know It's True, I Can't Understand You - великолепные соул-фанк песни. Seems To Me и Party On - клевое фанки диско. I'm Trying To Love Again, I'm For You - романтический соул. I Want My Love - это из другой оперы, ду-воп из шестидесятых записанный Джо в группе Sir Joe & the Maidens. "Get Down Baby" and "I'm a Young Man" - стопропроцентный заводной фанки-грув в духе дебютного альбома "Free Soul", однако эти трэки уже были изданы в свое время на семидюймовках.
Отличнейший сборник, увы был издан только на территории Японии, и тираж уже давно распродан. Если у Вас нет копии, то слушаем цифровую версию :)

Раритетный афробит из Нигерии. Monomono - вовсе не говорит о фанатичном поклонении группы перед моно звучанием, пластинка записана в стерео формате. А "MonoMono" на языке нигерийского племени Айруба означает "рассвет самосознания". Мономоно это квартет музыкантов, состоявщий из бывшего конгоиста Фелы Кути - Фрайдея Джумбо (Friday Jumbo), вокалиста Джони Хааструпа (Joni Haastrup), бассиста Кеннета Окулоло (Kenneth Okulolo) и органиста Кандидо Обажими (Candido Obajimi).
"Give the beggar a chance" дебютная запись коллектива записанная в тогдашней столице Нигерии, Лагосе.
Получилась очень самобытная грувовая пластинка, нашпигованная экзотичными африканскими ритмами смешанными с психоделией. Зафьюженные гитарки, хаммонд орган, конго и различные перкуссии украсили каждый трэк заводными сэмплами, за что пластинка очень ценится в кругах диджеев. Первые шесть трэков - протяжные вокальные песни, с проникновенным голосом Джони Хааструпа. Пять из них спеты на английском. Особо отмечу середину композиции The World Might Fall Over - очень жесткий афрофанк замес! Финальным трэком идет увесистый инструментальный афробит Kenimania - с отличным сэмплом кричалкой "Хэээй!".

"Народный феномен самостоятельного изготовления необходимой бытовой вещи - явление яркое, масштабное, стихийное, неизвестное.
Такие вещи всегда были и есть сегодня в любой стране мира, но наша книга посвящена только русской части этого феномена.
Почти всегда мой интерес, проявленный по отношению к какой-то вещи, вызывал спонтанное желание автора вещи рассказать `как это было`, что навело меня на мысль: хорошо бы записывать эти истории. Я купил диктофон, фотоаппарат и стал документировать процесс. Иногда мне дарили свои старые фотографии, где авторы значительно моложе своих лет. Кроме того, некоторые не сообщали или просили не упоминать их имена, фамилии, профессии, место работы или место жительства, что наводит на определенные размышления.
Сегодня в моей коллекции около тысячи вещей, которые объединяют три признака: функциональность, визуальная уникальность, свидетельство автора - изготовителя и потребителя в одном лице. Они представляют удивительную часть современной народной материальной культуры."
